Tiled Roofs

Tiled Roofs from Oakcrest Roofing

Concrete interlocking tiles cover a large share of post-war and modern houses, while clay plain tiles and pantiles turn up on older and character properties. Each type has its own minimum pitch, headlap and fixing pattern, and getting those details wrong is a common reason tiled roofs leak long before the tiles themselves wear out. We work to the manufacturer's requirements for the tile you choose, which keeps any product guarantee valid.

Re-tiling makes sense when the tiles have become porous, lost their surface, or are held on by corroded nails and perished underlay. Sound tiles can often be reclaimed for small repairs elsewhere, or we can offer a close match from current ranges so the roof sits comfortably next to the neighbours. You get samples where the colour matters, and a written quote that names the exact tile.

The process

How we carry out tiled roofs

From the first look at the roof to the final clear-up, this is how the job runs.

  1. 1

    Step 1 of 4

    Tile and pitch check

We measure the pitch, identify the existing tile and confirm whether a like-for-like or alternative tile suits the roof.

  2. 2

    Step 2 of 4

    Strip and prepare

Old tiles and battens are removed, timbers inspected and photographed, and breathable membrane laid over the rafters.

  3. 3

    Step 3 of 4

    Batten and lay

Battens are set to the gauge the chosen tile needs, then tiles are laid from the eaves up, with clips and nails to the fixing schedule.

  4. 4

    Step 4 of 4

    Finish the edges

Ridges, hips, verges and abutments are completed, valleys lined, and gutters cleared of debris before we leave.

Why choose us

Why homeowners choose Oakcrest for tiled roofs

A written price first

You get an itemised quote before any work starts, so you know what you are paying for and nothing changes once the scaffold is up.

Photos of what we find

We photograph the parts of the roof you cannot see from the ground, so you can judge the problem for yourself rather than take our word for it.

Repair or replace, honestly

If a repair will see the roof through, that is what we quote. When a roof is at the end of its life we tell you, so you can plan instead of paying twice.

Tidy sites, waste removed

Your garden, drive and windows are protected while we work, and every old tile, batten and offcut leaves with us at the end of the job.

Pricing

What affects the cost of tiled roofs

A tiled roof is priced on a few key points:

  • Concrete or clay tile, and the specific range chosen
  • Roof area and the number of hips, valleys and abutments
  • Whether any existing tiles can be reused
  • Ridge and verge finish: mortar bedded or dry fixed

Drone roof surveys

Our drone roof survey and aerial inspection service provides an instant, efficient and safe way to assess the condition of your roof. Using HD drones, we capture detailed images and videos of hard-to-reach areas, identifying potential issues like leaks, cracks, and structural damage.

This non-invasive method reduces risks and disruption and results in accurate data without the need for roof ladders or expensive scaffolding. Ideal for residential, commercial or industrial properties, this service ensures thorough, cost-effective inspections every time.

We advise that you get your roof professionally surveyed every 2-3 years to keep up with any potential damage and early signs of wear and tear. If we catch minor repairs early, they will not become a more serious problem in the future.

FAQs

Common questions about tiled roofs

Are clay tiles better than concrete?

Neither is simply better. Clay holds its colour well and suits older houses, while concrete is usually cheaper and comes in large interlocking formats that are quick to lay. The right choice depends on the house, the pitch and your budget, and we show you both where either would work.

Can you match my existing tiles?

Often, yes. Many concrete profiles are still made, and where a tile has been discontinued we can source a close match or use reclaimed tiles. For a partial re-tile we show you samples before any order is placed.

Why do some of my tiles keep slipping?

Slipped tiles usually point to rusted nails, broken nibs or rotten battens. One or two can be refixed, but if it is happening across a slope the fixings are failing generally and re-tiling that section is the longer-term answer.

Will heavier tiles be a problem for my roof?

Switching from a lightweight covering to clay or concrete adds load, so the roof structure needs checking first. We look at the rafter sizes and spacing during the survey and tell you if strengthening would be needed.
