Dry Fix Roofing

Dry Fix Roofing from Oakcrest Roofing

Traditionally, ridge and hip tiles are bedded on sand and cement, and verges are pointed with mortar. Over time the mortar shrinks, cracks and lets go, and loose ridge tiles are one of the most frequent call-outs after a windy spell. Dry fix systems replace the mortar with screws, clips, unions and ventilated rolls, so each tile is held mechanically and nothing relies on a bond that weathers away.

Current British Standard guidance says mortar should not be relied on as the only fixing for ridges, hips and verges, and dry fix is the most common way of meeting that. Dry systems also allow ventilation at the ridge, which helps the loft breathe. You can have dry fix as part of a new roof, or retrofitted to an existing roof where the mortar has failed.

A written price first

You get an itemised quote before any work starts, so you know what you are paying for and nothing changes once the scaffold is up.

Photos of what we find

We photograph the parts of the roof you cannot see from the ground, so you can judge the problem for yourself rather than take our word for it.

Drone roof surveys

Our drone roof survey and aerial inspection service provides an instant, efficient and safe way to assess the condition of your roof. Using HD drones, we capture detailed images and videos of hard-to-reach areas, identifying potential issues like leaks, cracks, and structural damage.

This non-invasive method reduces risks and disruption and results in accurate data without the need for roof ladders or expensive scaffolding. Ideal for residential, commercial or industrial properties, this service ensures thorough, cost-effective inspections every time.

We advise that you get your roof professionally surveyed every 2-3 years to keep up with any potential damage and early signs of wear and tear. If we catch minor repairs early, they will not become a more serious problem in the future.

FAQs

Common questions about dry fix roofing

Is dry fix better than mortar?

For holding tiles in place, in most cases yes, because it does not crack or wash out. Mortar can still look right on some older or slate roofs, so we discuss the look you want as well as the performance.

Can dry fix be added to an existing roof?

Yes. Ridges and verges are commonly converted to dry fix without re-roofing, provided the tiles and battens at those edges are in good order.

Will dry fix change how my roof looks?

A dry ridge looks very similar to a mortar ridge once fitted, with slim unions at the joints. Dry verge units are visible at the gable edge, and they come in colours to suit most tiles.

Does dry fix need maintenance?

Very little. A quick visual check after high winds is sensible, but there is no pointing to renew.
